The circadian lamp · Edition One of 500

Light thatkeeps timewith the sun.

Aubade reproduces the colour and intensity of the daylight outside your window, minute by minute, so the room you live in keeps the same time your body does.

Concept, design and build by Matt Klette

01 · Why

For three hundred thousand years we lived by one light. Then we moved indoors, and stopped the clock at noon.

90%
of our lives are now spent indoors, away from the sky that sets our body clock.
20×
brighter: an overcast morning outside, against the light of a typical office.
4000 K
the colour most offices hold from nine to five, whatever the sky outside is doing.

02 · A day, in light

How Aubade follows a day, from blue hour to night

Night

Under five lux and almost free of blue. Enough light to find a glass of water, too little to tell your body it's morning.

03 · The object

Made slowly,
to be kept.

Three materials, each chosen because it ages well. No screen, no app you need to open, no plastic anywhere you can touch. It should still be on your table in fifty years.

i. Ø 28 or 40 cm · 2.1 mm wall

Mouth-blown opal glass

Each globe is blown by hand and cased in a layer of opal, so the light has no source you can find, only a glowing volume. No two are quite the same.

ii. CZ121 brass · hand-brushed

Solid brass, brushed by hand

Unlacquered, so it darkens where you touch it. In ten years the patina will be yours alone.

iii. 3.4 kg base · felt underside

Honed travertine

Roman stone, pores filled and honed to a soft sheen. Heavy enough that the lamp never wobbles.

Eleven-channel spectral engine

Not a dimmer.
A whole spectrum.

Eleven LED channels blend into the shape of real daylight, from ember to blue-white noon. Colour rendering stays at CRI 98 across the whole day, so skin and wood look like themselves.

Questions, answered.

How does it know what the sky is doing?

On setup you give it a postcode, once. From then on it calculates the sun's position for your exact location every minute, on the lamp itself, and follows the curve of a clear day. Nothing is sent anywhere.

What if I want reading light at midnight?

Turn the dial. Aubade gives you as much light as you ask for. It just keeps the colour honest, warm at night, so reading late doesn't tell your body it's noon.

Will it replace my alarm?

It's designed to. Thirty minutes before you wake, the globe brightens from a 1 lux ember to morning light, so the room tells you it's time before the alarm has to.

Is the reservation binding?

No. The deposit holds your edition number and is refunded in full, on request, any time before your lamp ships.

Where is it made?

Globes are mouth-blown in a small Central European glassworks; brass is turned and brushed in Birmingham; final assembly, testing and numbering happen by hand in the studio.
